Cornea and ocular surface

Cornea is the clear tissue located at the front of the eye. It is usually transparent which allows light to pass into the eye.

The ocular surface comprises of a layer of tears and some fats. It is important for this tear film to be intact for clear vision and ocular comfort

Corneal eye disease is one of the leading cause for avoidable blindness and it effects more than 10 Million people worldwide after Cataract, Glaucoma and Age related macular degeneration.

Causes of corneal disease can include:

  • Infection: Bacterial, fungal and viral infections are common causes of corneal damage.
  • Keratoconus -abnormal shape of cornea
  • Age: Aging can affect the quality and health of the cornea
  • Cataract & Intraocular lens implant surgery: Bullous Keratopathy although seen in very small percentage of patients after these surgical procedures.
  • Hereditary corneal diseases
  • Contact lenses
  • Eye trauma
  • Certain systemic diseases

These diseases can cause corneal blindness due to their effects such as swelling, melting of the corneal tissue and scarring.

Treatment :
At DMEH we offer complete examination of your eye for Corneal disease through diagnostic technology such as magnifying tools and Slit lamp, anterior segment OCT(Heidelberg, Spectralis ) which can detect signs of corneal infection, inflammation, scarring, and other problems associated with the front structure of the eye. A special dye may be used to determine the extent of the damage.

We offer treatments for the following conditions:

1. Corneal Infections
Corneal infections can occur due to a variety of causes such as injury with leaves, insects, soil ,improper contact lens usage and low immunity.

2. Dry Eye
Dry eye usually occurs when tears are inadequate in quantity or quality causing a poor ocular surface. Commonly seen in computer professionals and with smartphone overuse.

3. Chemical burns
Chemical & Acid injury of the eye is an ocular emergency and requires immediate intervention to save from severe damage to the eye if not chemical injuries to the eye can produce extensive damage to the ocular surface and cornea and which leads to visual loss and disfigurement of the eye.

4. Chuna injury
Once chuna enters the eye, it sticks to the eye surface and cannot be dislodged completely through washing. Chuna is a chemical that can destroy the cornea and ocular surface leading to permanent disfigurement and vision loss.

5. Pterygium Removal Surgery
The procedure involves removal abnormal tissue from the sclera and cornea of the eye. Today this surgical technique has a higher success rate than conventional procedures and the patient heals within two to four weeks with mild discomfort.

6. Corneal Transplant
An unhealthy, damaged cornea affects your vision by whitening of the normally transparent corneal tissue. During this procedure, the unhealthy cornea is removed and a clear healthy cornea donated from a deceased donor is put in its place.
